In 2 Samuel 23:8-17, we get a look at how the Bible defines a champion. Here are three leadership qualities that came to define David’s mighty men, a.k.a. warriors:
1. Though weary, they cling to their swords (2 Samuel 23:9-10). Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” The greatest victories are reserved for those who have every reason to quit, but simply will not let go of their sword. “Effort only fully releases its reward after a person refuses to quit,” said Napoleon Hill. Eleazar, though battle weary, clung to his sword until the Lord wrought a great victory. And a sweet victory it was!
2. They stand while others are retreating (2 Samuel 23:11-12). Fear is contagious. If a parent has fear written on their face, so will their child. If a leader demonstrates trepidation, his troops will suffer timidity as well. When coaches are uncertain, players are also inhibited. But on the other hand, courage is also contagious. Shammah stood his ground and fought while his companions fled in fear of the Philistines. He watched them all retreat while he planted himself in his God-given assignment until God delivered a great victory. Andrew Jackson said, “One person with courage makes a majority.” I believe God’s Word substantiates this. Moses, Joshua, David, Daniel, Shammah, and many others had to stand alone in courage as others around them collapsed in fear.
3. They risk everything to champion the King’s cause (2 Samuel 23:13-17). When David was thirsty, three of his mighty men broke through the camp of their adversaries to draw water from a well so the king could have a drink. They risked everything to honor their king’s cause. Great leaders and proven champions understand that the cause is bigger than themselves. They risk personal reputations, individual accolades, and self-serving agendas to champion a greater victory. They see the bigger picture. And they give themselves vehemently to the Cause even when great personal risk is on the line. There is no greater cause in the universe than that of making Jesus famous, and we need leaders today who are willing to risk it all to champion the cause of Christ over career ambitions, individual goals, ministry titles, and personal endeavours. We need leaders who will risk it all for the cause of the King. We need more mighty men in this hour… we need more champions!
