Joseph’s Dream: Losing Coats, Not Hope

Text: Genesis 39:2–3

“For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.” — Romans 11:29

When Steve Jobs was forced out of Apple—the company he co-founded—it looked like he had lost everything: influence, status, and identity. To the world, his “coat” had been stripped away. But he didn’t lose his vision. He went on to create Pixar and NeXT, eventually returning to Apple to lead it into its most groundbreaking era.

Jobs’ story reminds us that losing a position doesn’t mean losing your purpose—or the dream.

Joseph lived a similar truth. Twice in his life, his coats were stripped away. First, his brothers tore off the robe of many colors that symbolized his father’s favor (Genesis 37:3–4). Later, Potiphar’s wife seized his garment and used it as false evidence (Genesis 39:12–13). Both coats represented position, status, and favor—but neither coat carried the dream. What God had spoken over Joseph could not be stolen.

The dream was never in the garment; it was in God’s promise. Our identity is not found in a particular position, status, or title. Those things may shift or be stripped away, but our “coat” is our calling—the one God Himself has placed upon us. And Scripture assures us, “The gifts and the calling of God are without repentance” (Romans 11:29). Joseph lost two coats, but he never lost the dream, because God’s word and calling are unshakable.

In our own lives, we may lose “coats”—jobs, influence, relationships, or resources. It can feel like the dream is slipping away. But Joseph’s story shows us that God’s promises aren’t bound by these things. Life has its way of stripping things away, but it cannot take away God’s presence or cancel His call on our lives. When the Lord is with us, the dream—and the calling—lives on. Think about that as you abide in Him this week.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Joseph’s story and for the reminder that my identity is not in titles, positions, or possessions. My true “coat” is the calling You’ve placed on my life, and Your word assures me that Your gifts and calling are without repentance. Even when I lose what looks important, Your presence is enough and Your purpose still stands. Help me walk in confidence, holding fast to the dream You’ve given me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
