Elsa Hammer: The Fear That Sets Us Free

Text: Luke 12:4-7

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” —Luke 12:4-7

She was seen by her Creator — every moment of her life was precious to Him. The cruelty of man could not erase her from His memory. I was mindful of this as I stood at a memorial for Elsa Hammer. Her name is engraved today on a small brass Stolperstein (“stumbling stone”) in front of her former home in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

The only Jew living in Friedrichshafen at the time, Elsa was arrested during a time of darkness. After the death of her Christian husband in July 1943, she lost protection as part of a “privileged mixed marriage” and was deported to Auschwitz, where she was murdered. Elsa Hammer’s memorial reminds us that even in the darkest chapters of history, God still sees. Human cruelty may try to erase a name, a person, but heaven never forgets.

Luke 12:4–7 sits in a moment where Jesus is speaking frankly to His disciples about coming opposition, and it’s framed by the reality of persecution. He wanted them free from the fear of man, aware that man’s reach stops at the grave, while God’s reach spans eternity. And here is the remarkable thing: the same God they were commanded to revere and worship was the God who loved them infinitely and intimately — the One who counts every sparrow, numbers every hair, and never forgets a single name.

Jesus pointed to the sparrows, which in that time were so common and inexpensive that they were almost worthless in the marketplace. Yet He says not one is forgotten by God. If that’s true for small birds, how much more true is it for us — made in His image, deeply loved, and known in every detail?

This passage invites us to rest in God’s shepherding care over our lives. He knows every hair on our head, every hidden worry, every fear — conscious or subconscious. In seasons of darkness, loss, or feeling invisible, His Word reminds us: You are not overlooked. You are worth more than you can imagine. NOT for one moment are you ever forgotten!

The “fear” of God which Jesus taught means awe, reverence, and ultimate allegiance — trusting Him above all else. For Christ followers, this sacred fear does not become a chain, but a key — unlocking the courage to face down the fear of man. And courage rises from knowing that we are safe in His hands, whether in life or death. Think about that as you seek to abide in Him this week.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for knowing me so completely and loving me so deeply. In moments when I feel small or forgotten, help me remember Your watchful care. Give me the courage that comes from fearing You above all else. Teach me to see my life as held in Your care, and to live boldly for justice and mercy, no matter the cost. May I never value my safety above the call to love others in Your name. Amen.
